Camp: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Presented with Ankara Skirt During Visit to Camp GLOW in Lilongwe, Malawi

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) an annual, world wide young women’s empowerment camp, organized and run by Peace Corps Volunteers, in Lilongwe, Malawi during her recent visit Africa.

“I’m very proud of our Peace Corps Volunteers because they are standing up for the idea that every young woman can make a difference in her own life and in her community. And it is a great pleasure for me always, as I travel around the world, to meet Peace Corps Volunteers, who represent the great values and ideals of our nation.” – Hillary Clinton

Camp GLOW was held at Lilongwe School for girls, and included about 60 Secondary School girls from all across Malawi, and 20 Camp GLOW staff, including Volunteers from Peace Corps Malawi, and Malawian Counselors.

The week-long camp discusses topics such as HIV/AIDS, human rights, violence against women, and the importance of young women continuing their education. Young women in Malawi struggle with completing secondary school due to influences such as lack of school fees, pregnancy and forced marriages.

17-year-old Triza Lapani helps Hillary Rodham Clinton to put on the cloth, a type of traditional skirt worn all over Africa.

Update: I had originally posted the photo below and mentioned that Hillary Clinton wore it to the Queen of Katwe Movie Premiere in Hollywood, California. One of our ankaranistas corrected us on Instagram and we adjusted the post to reflect the proper information.
